The Adventures of Going Reef Surfing

You love surfing. You’ve always been into it since the time you had your first surfboard, a 21st birthday gift from your brother. You major problem is that you are only able to do this when you’re in Hawaii for a visit or when you find yourself visiting the Philippines and end up in Siargao.

Then your local government unit has come up with ways to save the ocean, the marine life that thrives in it, and put some artificial reefs to encourage fish and other marine creatures to populate the place. It would surprise you that these artificial reefs work as a breakwater resulting to having surfable waves. This is when you discover how to reef surf.

It’s the same as natural surfing only that when people reef surf they are actually surfing on the waves produced by the reefs that are found in the surrounding beach area. It won’t matter if the reefs are made of the natural stuff or artificial, what matters is that the wave it is creating becomes manna from heaven for reef surf addicts.

You have to know though that reef surf is more dangerous and challenging than surfing the natural waves of the ocean. Reefs that are made by nature have spikes in them and they are rock solid which makes falling off your surf board not a good idea. If falling is inevitable, wearing a helmet will give you protection. Of course you don’t want to end up having a head cut or suffering from a concussion, right? Or your dignity might have been crushed after a fall which can be easily prevented if you were modest enough not to show off your skills.

Never forget that reef surfing is a dangerous and challenging adventure but safety must be first priority when you go into the water in the intention of riding huge waves. Always keep safe. This way, you get to experience the joys of surfing with more confidence and excitement. When you are sure that you are doing the right moves, wearing the right gear, then with this you are aware that you are safe from harm.

Famous beaches anywhere in the world offer reef surfing such as the El Segundo Beach in California and the Cable Beach in Perth or that one beach in Boscombe, UK that is known to produce 30% larger waves known for increasing the surfing days in the UK.

This means a celebration for the surfers since they can be in the US, the South Pacific, or the UK and they can still reef surf whenever they want.

If you’re in the Philippines, there’s always the beautiful Siargao. Happy surfing!
