Ways to remove wrinkles from a collared dress shirt

Even the nicest of dress shirts can look unattractive if worn with unsightly wrinkles. Proper ironing technique for a collared shirt can be confusing, however, as mens dress shirts often will have pleats as well as multiple lines that must be maintained throughout ironing. Ironing a shirt is something anyone can complete in their own home, once it’s mastered.

  • Step 1

Lay the shirt flat atop the ironing board, with the back of the shirt facing up and the point of the board at the neck of the shirt, and set the iron to its cotton setting.

  • Step 2

Iron the shirt along the length of the pleat in its appropriate position.

  • Step 3

Iron the body of the shirt in long strokes, without stopping, to prevent potentially burning the shirt. Reposition the shirt as needed throughout this process to iron out all wrinkles in the body of the shirt.

  • Step 4

Iron a sleeve of the shirt by laying the sleeve flat along the board, with the sleeve creased along the top and bottom of the shirt (extending from the shoulder and armpit) then turning the sleeve over and ironing the other side. Repeat for both sleeves.

  • Step 5

Place the collar flat with it’s inside facing up then spray it with starch and iron it.

  • Step 6

Turn the shirt over so the outside of the collar is facing up, and again starch it before ironing it.

  • Step 7

Fold the collar down as it will be when being worn, and iron around the seam to create a sharp crease. Do not iron the full collar in this step, just the edge of the collar with the tip of the iron.

We always recommend buying custom dress shirts due to their longevity especially after getting ironed a lot.
